Mr. & Mrs. Hang

I can hardly believe it but yesterday marked my 2nd year anniversary! And while I sometimes feel like we’re an old married couple - the last 2 years has simply flown by and I still am so excited to see you each & every time!

I’m still, just SO lucky to have you, Vi. I love you! Happy Anniversary!

Happy mother’s day to my beautiful mom!

It’s well known among my friends that I love to cook, but even I get a little lazy sometimes…Guacamole, chips, strawberries and grapes for a low key afternoon at home. Some pastries from the boulangerie too :)

First attempt at a kaiseki-inspired course meal to honor springtime in Tokyo, after returning from a sakura-and-kaiseki filled trip to Kyoto earlier this month…

Did my best to follow not only the selection of typical food used but also the spirit of the kaiseki (color, texture, flavor, presentation, and tradition). Though, I doubt any real Japanese person would consider this “kaiseki” - it was still a good attempt on my part, I thought.

Anyway, here’s the menu I came up with and some photos of how the dinner panned out. Not too bad, right?

  • Ebi edamame with crisp potato croutons and a puff pastry lotus
  • Parboiled Japanese ‘firefly’ squid [ホタルイカ - hotaruika] with spinach
  • Pan-seared diver scallops [ホタテ - hotate] with japanese dashi-tamago eggs and eringi mushrooms
  • Spring chicken-vegetable tsukune in a white miso dashi
  • Pan-seared Norwegian salmon and lemon
  • Hokkaido crab and mitsuba [炊き込みごはん - takikomigohan] steamed mixed rice in an earthen pot
  • Azuki redbeans in a baked mochi shell and strawberries
  • Japanese green tea

April 13 - 15 was the official Cambodian Khmer New Year this year, and there was no better way to celebrate than with some good food.

Normally, we should be with family visiting the Buddhist temple, but since they are too far - we could only do the next best thing. Make tasty food that reminded us of home and head to the next most serene place, the park.

One of our favorite foods we eat at home in San Jose are Lee’s chicken banhmi’s. I know it’s not quite Cambodian, but it’s a nostalgic little number for us. So for our picnic, I made a 5 spice spicy chicken banhmi accompanied with lots of fruit, savory bites, and fresh pastries from near our home, then took it all to Shinjuku Gyoen for a warm, sunny Sunday picnic.

It was a nice day and very yummy way to start the Cambodian New Year.

As much as I said this was my version of a St. Paddy’s Day dinner. It was actually just another dinner at the house…for no real reason is except my friends and I are all gluttons and can’t wait for Spring to come around!

Another Sunday at home. Vi working while Clara cooking.

Friends since when we were single. Now, see us in the ‘babies-who-mingle’ chapter!

Should I fight an evil man who abducts children and forces them into sexual servitude and child soldiery? The answer seems obvious. Yes. But what if I don’t know who this man is or how to find him? What if I didn’t even know that this man existed? Well, never mind then. I would care about if I…

My Hong Kong girlfriend, Cheryl, makes a friendly visit to Tokyo with her beau, James, to celebrate her 26th birthday!

We went for our first snowboarding trip to Hokkaido this last February and it was absolutely freezing. From the ice village to the snow covered train tracks - we were frozen icicles! Check out some of our pics to see how cold it was…

Getting spoiled by Vi on V day!
